Really, I'm sorry about the crap I'm posting, but I just want to get it out there. I'm really trying to get down mechanical effects for a personal project I hope to do. Any tips would be appreciated.

cute. too bad its just one hand.
well, one thing i'd like to suggest is to convert this to a movie clip, and its parts divided into layers a lot, in case that isnt what youve done here. what i mean is:
one layer for the red fire,
another for the hand frame,
another for hand color.
this way, your animation is "editable" and "reusable". for example, you'd want to attach this hand to a robot body, then you wouldnt have to be worrying about overlapping drawings and stuff.
just note that putting it in a movie clip would mean that it would play again and again because it's timeline is different from the main timeline, and to control it (ei stop/play), you would have to "call" the movie clip, and then assign the action.
